Multi-Sensory
Room
The multi-sensory room
is the relaxation destination for people
with disabilities at the Hattie Larlham
Center for Children with Disabilities (HLCCD).
The multi-sensory room is an experience
for the senses. Whether they are having
a bad day or just need a pick me up, HLCCD
residents can retreat to this sensory oasis
right inside the building.
The room features a number
of devices, activities and experiences designed
to both stimulate and sooth the senses as
well as promote relaxation and focus. These
stimuli support behaviors of individuals
with sensory and/or neurological impairments.
Rooms like the multi-sensory room at Hattie
Larlham have been shown to enhance coordination,
communication and language development,
sensory development and relaxation in people
with disabilities.
Many features in the room
are switch-adapted to allow individuals
the opportunity to manipulate them independently.
Cause and effect is one lesson stressed
in the room. Individuals get first hand
experience learning about outcomes by pushing
switches to change a bubble tube’s
color or song on the stereo.
Different types of lighting,
such as black lights and disco balls, create
playful patterns or fun new colors on visitors
to the multi-sensory room. A kaleidoscope
projector shines a rainbow of color on the
walls. Fiber optic light-curtains fade from
color to color and a set of large bubble
tubes percolate and blink with multi-colored
lights.
The room also contains
a collection of sensory toys that incorporate
sounds, textures and visual stimulants designed
to hold the attention or relax the mind.
The multi-sensory room is also equipped
with a wheelchair accessible swing so that
people in wheelchairs may enjoy the gentle
rocking motion of a swing to round out their
relaxation experience.
