Creative
Arts History
In 2004, when staff at
Hattie Larlham began exploring the possibilities
of art therapy for children and adults with
disabilities, few realized its impact. During
these initial classes, children and young
adults with disabilities experimented with
techniques and media like watercolor.
By June 2007, having realized
the benefit of creative exploration and
self expression, Hattie Larlham services
expanded to include the Creative Arts program.
Staff for this program
received training from the ART Realizations
Program in New Jersey and the Matheny
Arts Access Program. Utilizing the Arts
Access methods and the charting system they
developed during the past 10 years, the
program took on a new dimension as it combined
art, technology and choice to produce unique
and expressive works of art created by children
and adults with disabilities.
