Realistic Job Preview: A Sneak Peek at Becoming a Direct Support Professional

What does direct support mean?
A Direct Support Professional (DSP) is someone who works one-on-one with people with physical disabilities and/or intellectual disabilities. DSPs play an important role in assisting people served to maintain a standard of living and become valued members of their community.

Work locations for DSPs at Hattie Larlham include:

  • In-Home Care – individual care to a person with disabilities who lives on their own or with family.
  • Group Home Care – work with 3-8 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities that live in the same home.
  • Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) – work with medically fragile babies, children and young adults with severe intellectual disabilities. In an ICF, residents also receive around-the-clock medical care from a team of experts.
  • Day Program – provide personal care for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and opportunities for social and group interaction through community inclusion and involvement.  
What to expect:

Hattie Larlham follows the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities rules and regulations. In your position, you will maintain compliance with all of these requirements. Here are some of the things you need to know and general tasks you will have as a DSP:

  • The majority of your time will be spent in direct contact with someone to provide them with the level of assistance they require.
  • You will accompany persons served on community outings and enjoy fun activities
  • You may be required to assist a person with meal prep, cleaning, or giving small reminders.
  • When necessary, you will be responsible for helping people served with everyday living skills such as getting dressed, eating and attending activities and medical appointments.
  • Complete documentation of accomplishments throughout the day
  • Attend meetings and training regarding persons served
  • Maintain contact with family members and keep them up-to-date on the progress of their loved one
  • Communicate with other healthcare professionals, including nurses and therapists, about providing the best care to the person served.

Job requirements:

  • 18 years +
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED
  • Satisfactory results of a criminal background screening, drug and alcohol screening.
  • DSPs hired into a driving position must meet driving requirements. Not all DSP positions require driving.

Your availability and attendance to the shift you are hired into is essential. Hattie Larlham provides around-the-clock care to the people we serve. Our residents require constant monitoring and cannot be left alone. Your reliability, punctuality and commitment to this job are very important.
