School is part of growing up. Hattie Larlham provides education services to children with developmental disabilities as they grow up into young adults.
There are several education options available to the children and young adults with developmental disabilities at Hattie Larlham. Education services can be delivered in the Hattie Larlham Center for Children with Disabilities in Mantua, Ohio, at the Hattie Larlham Autism Preschool or in the community school. Some children with developmental disabilities board a school bus weekday mornings to attend school in the setting of their choice.
The Hattie Larlham Autism Preschool is at the Hattie Larlham Center for Children with Disabilities in Mantau, Ohio.
The Hattie Larlham Autism Preschool combines children with and without disabilities in the same classroom. This interaction between peer groups creates a mentoring system between the children that fosters both educational and social growth. By introducing children with autism to typical children early in their education, the Hattie Larlham Autism Preschool prepares children with autism for kindergarten classes.
Students in the Hattie Larlham Autism Preschool receive one-to-one and group instruction. The preschool’s curriculum is approved by the Ohio Department of Education.
Operated out of the Hattie Larlham Center for Children with Disabilities, the community school provides educational services for children with developmental disabilities unable to attend an offsite school or who choose to receive educational services at Hattie Larlham.
Students who attend the community school receive a goal-orientated, modified curriculum that promotes learning and development and meets Ohio Academic Content Standards.
The community school provides educational services for for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Areas of study include, English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. The school exposes students to grade-appropriate curriculum via the use of multi-media, adaptive equipment and a multi-disciplinary staff.
Daily schedules incorporate each students’s abilities and skill level. Students who attend the community school engage in a variety of activities that stimulate their development. Students also have access to the pool room, multi-sensory room and sensory walk and playground during their school day.
