Constant
Companions
Through
programs like Constant Companions, Hattie
Larlham continues expanded its services
to find new and innovative ways to help
people with disabilities. These programs
provide new hope and excitement to people
with disabilities and helps expand their
possibilities and accomplishments.
Constant Companions is
a unique alternative to traditional work
or day programs for people with mental retardation
and developmental disabilities (MR/DD).
The program focuses on the mutually beneficial
interaction between people with disabilities
and various domestic animals such as dogs,
cats, rabbits, birds and fish. These animals
are used as teaching aids to encourage participants
to nurture and learn about the animals in
their care.
Research shows that regular
contact with pets can have positive effects
on both the physical and emotional health
of individuals with disabilities as well
as improve their quality of life. People
who have regular contact with animals typically
are more focused and aware of their social
environments and tend to exhibit more nurturing
behaviors.
The Constant Companions
program serves as a link to the community
animal rescue programs as well as providing
a home to several rescued animals. The program
also provides foster care to animals waiting
to be adopted.
